Sharing videos

With so many different video formats (wmv for Microsoft, mov for Apple, etc) it can sometimes be difficult to share videos between friends. Besides dealing with different formats, users must deal with transferring large files. Some videos are just too big to stuff in an email. Maybe that's why YouTube has become so popular.

Still, YouTube doesn't accept every media type. Increasingly, videos are being made available in yet another format, Macromedia's flash video format. So how does someone post a movie on YouTube when its in a format that YouTube doesn’t support. Here’s how.

  1. Download and install VLC media player for free http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
  2. Start VLC media player and drop the flv file on the player.
  3. Select "File | Wizard", "Transcode/Save to file", Next
  4. Select "Existing playlist", Next
  5. Select "Transcode video", "Transcode audio", Next (leave everything else as defaults)
  6. Select "MPEG 1", Next
  7. Select Choose, give the new file a name with an mpeg extension, Next

VLC can transcode the video into a variety of formats. I ran some tests with different "Encapsulation formats" to see how YouTube would react. Here are the results for "070220-sword9p1.flv".

sword-mpeg1-mpeg1-partial.mpg : Rejected (length of video is too long
sword-mpeg1-mpeg1.mpg : Live!
sword-mpeg1-mpegps.mpg : Rejected (length of video is too long)
sword-mpeg1-mpegts.mpg : Rejected (length of video is too long)
sword-mpeg1-ogg.mpg : Failed (invalid file format)
sword-mpeg1-raw.mpg : Failed (invalid file format)

Install everything

Sprout is presently running "Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg)". I don't necessarily install every FC version as it comes out. When FC5 came out, they had removed the "Install everything" option. The FC6 release wasn't any better. I've been waiting for them to fix this problem, despite the lame arguments others have proposed against it. The argument was rather lame, in my opinion, and showed no regard for people who didn't necessarily want to become intimately familiar with all the packages installed on their system. These people missed a simple truth: some people don't want to know about the details of an OS installation; that's for RedHat to worry about. That's their job. After all, if this isn't RedHat's job, then what is? I was under the impression that this, above all, WAS their job. I mean, it's why I joined their little club. Otherwise I would have just rolled my own distribution. I want to let them worry about the toils of building an OS, that's their job, let me focus on my job.

I followed the discussion when FC5 came out but grew tired of the debate. Anyway, FC7, which is due April 24 appears to have this issue resolved. Unfortunately, RHEL5 which is due Feb 28 will be based on FC6.

Visit the Wikipedia page for information on older versions of RedHat.

Monochrom

Monochrom will be speaking at Dorkbot, 19 February 2007 7:30 PM PST.

Among their projects, monochrom has released a leftist retro-gaming project, established a one baud semaphore line through the streets of San Francisco, started an illegal space race through Los Angeles, buried people alive in Vancouver, and cracked the hierarchies of the art system with the Thomann Project. In Austria they ate blood sausages made from their own blood in order to criticize the grotesque neoliberal formation of the world economy. Sometimes they compose melancholic pop songs about dying media and they have hosted the first annual festival concerned with cocktail robotics. At the moment they're planning a conference about pornography as one of the driving forces of technological innovation. They also do international soul trade, propaganda camps, epic puppet theater, aesthetic pregnancy counseling, food catering, and - sorry to mention - modern dance.

Two of the Internet's most hated

Unfortunately, the world is filled with people who demonstrate the lowest of human qualities. They do it for all sorts of misguided reasons. Here are just a couple of them. I should warn you, the video below will make you want to yell at your monitor. I know at least one person out there is going to want to lump these guys in with "the left". Trust me, we hate them more than you do.

Social griefer Michael Crook is one of those people. But please don't refer to him as someone from the left. We hate him more than you do. This is just ONE of his sins against us. You can read more about him at 10zenmonkeys.com.

Cyber-sociopath Jason Fortuny have added him to the list. You can read more about him at boingboing.net.

A10n : i18n, l10n, m12n, etc

What are these crazy letter/number combinations? They're not 1337, if that's what you're wondering. In fact they are the shortened forms of the words internationalization, localization and modularization respectively. The words are made by taking the first and last letter and sandwitching the number of letttes in between. They're used through out computer science and is believed to have been started at Digital Equipment Corporation in the 1970s or 1980s. If we were to do this to my name, for example, we would compress the "atric" to 5 and sandwich it with the "p" and the "k" yielding p5k.

I actually just made up the a10n to stand for abbreviation, although I see I'm not the only one to think of it. Why is abbreviate such a LONG word anyway? If I were to coin that word I'd have it mean an abbreviation of the type I just mentioned, a special abbreviation in which you took the first and last letter with the middle letters replaced by the letter count.

a·ten·n [ey-ten-en]
-noun
1. A shortened form of a word used to represent the assembled by replacing the all but the first and letter with the count of the letters replaced.

Boy: I got it, here goes.
Girl: Ouch. It's OK, push it all the way.
Boy: I'm sorry it must have been painful.
Girl: It's OK as long as its you I can take the pain.

It looks like this trailer came out Feb 01.

Saudi Arabs road skating

I found this film some time back but have been surprised that more people haven't seen it. These guys are skating on asphalt, on the freeway, with other cars around. IE inline-block for Firefox

The inline-block value for display works in IE. In firefox, not so much. You could use two styles together, one for Firefox and one for IE but that would generate an error in Firefox. Instead, use CSS conditional comments to limit the IE specific style.

<style type="text/css">
.selector { display:table; }
